Carnell Tate was the first wide receiver selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, picked at No. 4 overall by the Tennessee Titans on April 23. This choice raised eyebrows as many expected him to land with a team where he could serve as a No. 2 receiver. During his time at Ohio State, Tate was never the primary receiver, leading to assumptions he’d fit best behind an established star.
Analysts predicted Tate might join the Washington Commanders at No. 7 overall. There, he could work alongside Terry McLaurin, supporting quarterback Jayden Daniels. Other potential suitors included the New York Giants and Kansas City Chiefs. In New York, Tate could have backed up Malik Nabers, helping young quarterback Jaxson Dart. Meanwhile, in Kansas City, he could have complemented Patrick Mahomes without the pressure of carrying the offense.
Instead, the Titans surprised many by selecting Tate. This decision highlights their strategy to bolster their offense, drafting quarterback Cam Ward No. 1 overall in 2025. Concerns about Tate’s readiness to be a No. 1 receiver do not deter Ward.
“He’ll have an explosive year just because he’ll get a lot of one-on-one matchups,” Ward told ESPN’s Turron Davenport. “I think this is one of the best offenses he could be in just because he’s going to get coached, but he’s not going to get overcoached, and he’s going to still be able to play football how he sees it.”
The Titans appointed Robert Saleh, known for his defensive expertise, as head coach in January. Brian Daboll, the former Giants head coach, joined as offensive coordinator shortly after. Although Daboll’s time with the Giants was mixed, he played a key role in the development of Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Daboll’s direction and the acquisition of wide receiver Stefon Diggs helped Allen excel.
The Titans aim for Tate to provide a similar boost to Ward’s performance as Diggs did for Allen. With the right coaching and team dynamics, the Titans hope to see Tate reach new heights, enhancing their offensive capabilities.
