A train collided with a van carrying schoolchildren in Buggenhout, Belgium, on Tuesday morning, leading to the tragic loss of two children and two adults. The incident, situated near Brussels, captured the attention of Belgian officials and the broader community.
The children were attending a special education institution, confirmed Kurt Moens, a deputy responsible for education in East Flanders, at a press conference held at the crash location.
Reports from local news outlets and official confirmations detailed that the van contained seven children alongside the driver and a counselor. Safety protocols were in place at the crossing with the barrier down and red lights flashing, yet the van proceeded across the tracks, noted Thomas Baeken, a spokesperson for Infrabel, a transportation infrastructure operator.
Mr. Baeken informed that the train’s emergency braking system was activated, though it failed to prevent the crash. The incident, which occurred at 8:08 a.m., was recorded by cameras for further investigation. “We are heartbroken,” he expressed.
In close proximity to Brussels, less than 20 miles away, Buggenhout mourned the loss of two children aged 12 and 15. Lisa De Wilde, representing the East Flanders public prosecutor’s office, identified the deceased driver as 49 years old and the counselor as 27.
Five minors sustained injuries severe enough to require hospitalization. While initially critical, their conditions stabilized by the time of the afternoon press briefing.
The tragedy prompted condolences from both Belgian and European officials. Bernard Quintin, the Belgian interior minister, conveyed his sorrow over the event on social media. Ursula von der Leyen, leader of the European Union’s executive branch, also extended her sympathy, highlighting that Europe stands in solidarity with Belgium during this difficult time.
