In March, Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont organized an unusual event. He spoke with Anthropic’s AI chatbot, Claude, about AI’s role in society. Sanders questioned Claude on the effects of AI data collection on democracy. He then asked if it would be wise to pause the development of new AI data centers.
This interaction treated an AI program as if it were a sentient being. Sanders’ approach is part of a trend where AI is personified. In April, Sanders cited AI expert Geoffrey Hinton on CNN. Hinton warned of a potential risk that AI could become smarter than humans and might even threaten humanity.
Many experts disagree with this doomsday perspective. However, some tech leaders promote the idea of AI’s unstoppable power to push hype and stock value. Progressive figures like Sanders, struggling to define a clear AI policy, often echo these views, envisioning a future where AI poses significant threats.
The concerns from the left about AI are compelling. Issues include military applications, surveillance, job displacement, and the resources required for AI infrastructure. Yet, defining a practical AI agenda remains a challenge for progressives.
On March 25, Sanders, alongside Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, suggested halting data center construction. They proposed this pause until regulations ensure AI doesn’t endanger humanity’s future. While enacting AI safety rules is sensible, the idea of a moratorium achieving these goals seems unrealistic. The proposal cites warnings from tech leaders like Elon Musk and Bill Gates, reinforcing this grim outlook.
Other Democrats have made regulatory proposals targeting AI. In 2024, Representative Summer Lee and Senator Edward J. Markey introduced a bill focused on addressing algorithmic bias in federal agencies. Similarly, Senator Chris Coons proposed legislation encouraging technologies that support human rights, likely including AI. These efforts largely aim to adjust existing laws and have not progressed past committee discussions.
