President Donald Trump declared on Monday that any agreement with Iran should necessitate the extension of the Abraham Accords to include additional countries such as Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The Abraham Accords are US-mediated agreements established to normalize relations with Israel. This initiative began during Trump’s first term.
In a social media post, Trump reported that negotiations are “proceeding nicely.” However, he conditioned any potential Iran agreement on the increased participation in the accords, initially signed in 2020. He identified Saudi Arabia and Qatar as nations that should swiftly join, followed by countries like Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan. Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates were the inaugural signatories in 2020.
Trump stressed that after the extensive efforts by the United States in assembling these intricate agreements, it should be compulsory for all these countries to join the Abraham Accords simultaneously. During negotiations on Saturday, he mentioned discussing this plan with leaders.
Trump suggested he might accept “one or two” nations opting out, but emphasized that most should be willing participants. Egypt and Jordan, which already officially recognize Israel, have established peace treaties with it.
The timing or method of finalizing any deal with Iran remains unpredictable. The impact of Abraham Accords membership on such an agreement is also uncertain. Nonetheless, Trump hinted that Iran itself might eventually join if a deal is reached.
The Abraham Accords represent a collection of diplomatic, economic, and security agreements influenced by the US. These agreements were originally established during Trump’s first term, between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain, followed by Sudan, Morocco, and more recently, Kazakhstan. The accords aim to enhance cooperation among countries in the Middle East and North Africa, with the US administration viewing them as paving the way for full diplomatic ties with Israel.
