After securing the 2023 U.S. Open title, Wyndham Clark seemed poised to elevate his PGA Tour career significantly. Contrary to expectations, his performance did not immediately soar. However, on Sunday, Clark clinched the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch. This marked his first PGA Tour win since February 2024. He finished the event with an impressive 30-under, surpassing Si Woo Kim by three shots.
A common belief in golf states that some tournaments are triumphs while others slip away. Clark won decisively by shooting a remarkable 11-under 60 in the final round. He nearly achieved an eagle on the 72nd hole, which could have resulted in a historic 59-round, a feat accomplished by only 15 players in PGA Tour history.
Kim began the final round with a two-shot lead over Clark and Scottie Scheffler. Although Kim played well, scoring six-under 65, Clark’s extraordinary play overshadowed Kim’s efforts. This victory showcased Clark’s ability to secure a win rather than relying on others’ mistakes.
The triumph represented a significant turnaround for Clark, who had recently been struggling. Earlier in May, he missed the cut at the PGA Championship. His last victory dated back to the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Prior to this, Clark had not won a 72-hole tournament since the 2023 U.S. Open.
Clark’s career began to gather momentum when he claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship. In February 2024, he won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with a stunning course-record 60 during the third round, although the final round was canceled due to rain, cutting the tournament short to 54 holes.
Clark nearly clinched the 2024 PLAYERS Championship, finishing tied for second. Within less than a year, the 29-year-old captured three titles, nearly winning a fourth. His achievements included a major victory, and he earned a spot on the 2023 U.S. Ryder Cup team.
Despite initial successes, Clark faced heightened expectations, not only from fans but from himself. His performance between 2023 and 2024 did not extend to 2025. During that year, he did not win and achieved only two top-10 finishes out of 24 tournaments. After failing to make the cut at the 2025 U.S. Open, Clark expressed his frustration by damaging a locker at Oakmont Country Club.

In a conversation with CBS golf reporter Amanda Balionis, Clark reflected on his struggles and discussed his progress. Though not part of the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup team, Clark acknowledged that he needs to improve in major tournaments. Despite a strong top-5 finish at the 2025 Open Championship, he missed the cut in five of his last ten major appearances. The T4 finish at the Open was his sole top-10 finish in a major since his 2023 U.S. Open win.
Clark’s next chance to prove himself comes at the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, starting June 18.
