California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer expressed his support for transgender athletes in high school sports during a podcast discussion released on Sunday. Steyer warned against excluding transgender youth from sports, emphasizing the potential negative impact on their emotional and mental health.
“I’m totally in favor of trans athletes in high school,” Steyer stated to “I’ve Had It” podcast host Jennifer Welch.
Steyer stressed the heightened vulnerability and challenges faced by transgender individuals, noting that a significant portion attempts suicide. He argued against the notion of isolating such students by preventing their participation in team sports, affirming that society should not resort to such punitive measures.
When speaking to CBS Los Angeles, Steyer reiterated his stance, labeling opposition as part of a “right-wing attempt” to misrepresent transgender people. He underscored that the issue is not widespread but rather exaggerated by political agendas.
Steyer’s comments arise as he campaigns among a group of Democrats aiming to maintain the party’s control of the governorship after Gov. Gavin Newsom’s term concludes.
The upcoming primary elections on June 2 will witness a diverse set of candidates, including Democratic figures such as Antonio Villaraigosa, Katie Porter, and Xavier Becerra. Additionally, Republican candidates Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco are part of the debate at East Los Angeles College.
Katie Porter supported youth sports as a means to promote character and teamwork, adding nuanced support to Steyer’s view. Becerra highlighted the necessity to uphold laws allowing participation based on gender identity.
Other Democratic candidates provided varied opinions. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan cautioned against the politicization of the issue, while recognizing potential fairness concerns. Antonio Villaraigosa denounced the debate as insignificant, but stressed an opposition to discrimination. He shared a belief against biological males who’ve undergone puberty competing in women’s sports.
Betty Yee advocated for methods to ensure fairness and inclusivity, whereas Tony Thurmond voiced clear support for transgender athletes.
Republican contenders Hilton and Bianco expressed intentions to revoke the current legislation permitting such athletic participation.
If anyone is experiencing thoughts of suicide, they are urged to contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
