Overview of the Reflecting Pool Renovation Project
In April, President Donald Trump announced a project to refurbish the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool by employing a contractor to coat its granite basin. He stated the project would cost $1.5 million, while criticizing prior administrations for their attempts to fix the site.
Claims and Findings
Trump alleged at a Cabinet meeting that his predecessors spent “hundreds of millions of dollars” on repairs. However, this statement has been challenged. During former President Barack Obama’s term, a significant renovation was undertaken, yet the cost was far from Trump’s claim.
Project Details Under Obama and Biden Administrations
Obama’s administration completed a large-scale, two-year reconstruction of the pool ending in 2012. The official cost was $34 million, contrary to Trump’s assertions. This project included installing a circulation and filtration system using river water to address stagnant water issues and leaks. Additionally, the pool was made shallower, and paths were paved.
There was no major work on the pool during the Biden administration. An estimate for a “full rehabilitation” under Biden exceeded $100 million, halting any comprehensive efforts. Routine cleaning was carried out annually to control algae.
Trump’s Renovation Efforts
Trump announced a plan to coat the pool with an “industrial grade pool” surface in “American flag blue.” Originally, plans to replace the granite were considered but dismissed due to an estimated cost of $301 million and a lengthy timeline. Trump reported various processes like steam-cleaning and sandblasting were used to preserve the pool. He also mentioned the removal of a significant amount of debris.
Cost Discrepancies
Federal spending records reveal over $14.8 million has been contracted for the project so far, a stark difference from Trump’s publicized $1.5 million to $2 million figure. Discrepancies in the cost provided by Trump and the records have not been directly addressed by Interior Department representatives.
“Thanks to President Trump, the Reflecting Pool will be restored to all its glory,” commented White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers, asserting that the project would be cost-effective compared to previous administrations.
