On Friday, former President Trump endorsed South Carolina’s lieutenant governor, Pamela Evette, as the state’s next governor. This announcement followed a special session where state lawmakers did not vote on a new congressional map. The proposed map aimed to eliminate South Carolina’s only majority Black district, securing a fully Republican delegation. Ms. Evette supported this redistricting effort.
In a statement on Truth Social, Mr. Trump praised Ms. Evette as a “good friend, fighter, and WINNER.” His endorsement placed him in alignment with South Carolina’s current governor, Henry McMaster, who is term-limited and supports Ms. Evette as his successor.
Mr. Trump also mentioned he expects Ms. Evette to choose Henry McMaster Jr., the governor’s son, as her lieutenant governor. Currently, six candidates are vying for the Republican nomination. These include Representatives Ralph Norman and Nancy Mace, state attorney general Alan Wilson, and former business executive Rom Reddy.
Both parties will hold their primary on June 9.
