German Troops in Lithuania: A European Shield Against Russian Aggression

7 days ago 0

Berlin has sent forces to the Baltic region to counter fears of rising Russian threats in Europe. This deployment marks a significant change, with the soldiers being welcomed upon arrival.

As Liutauras Ceprackas, a chef in Vilnius, Lithuania, sat in his restaurant, he shared his concerns about a potential Russian invasion. He doubted whether Lithuania’s 15,000-strong army could repel such a threat, and expressed uncertainty about support from NATO under American leadership.

The permanent stationing of German soldiers in Lithuania, more than 80 years after Nazi Germany’s harsh occupation, provides reassurance to citizens like Mr. Ceprackas. He believes that the presence of German troops acts as a deterrent. “If they kill just one German,” he said, referencing the Russian military, “it’s going to be a war with Germany.” He added that this likelihood “will keep us safe.”

Germany’s 45th Armored Brigade marks the first full battle brigade Germany has permanently stationed outside its borders since the Nazi era. This strategic move is a response to concerns over growing Russian aggression in Eastern Europe. It also signals Germany’s readiness to protect Europe amidst doubts about U.S. commitment under President Trump, who had long assured the safety of its allies in Europe.

During the brigade’s investiture, held in Vilnius’s central square last year, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged to expand Europe’s largest conventional army.
