A federal judge in Miami has reopened a $10 billion lawsuit by President Trump against the IRS, aiming to investigate allegations of deception in a prior settlement. This decision impacts both President Trump, who had dismissed the suit, and the Justice Department.
Judge Kathleen M. Williams, in her order, emphasized the need to explore the agreement reached to resolve the case. This agreement included a $1.8 billion fund for those claiming government ‘weaponization’ and conferred tax benefits on Trump and his businesses.
A bipartisan group of former federal judges had urged the reopening, intent on examining the agreement further. Initially, Judge Williams questioned the conflict presented by Trump suing a federal agency he oversaw. With her Friday order, she demands an investigation into whether fraud influenced the dismissal.
The Justice Department’s released agreement, bypassing the court’s decision, has sparked suspicion. Reports mentioned a 25-page IRS memo that the department overlooked, prompting the investigation.
Lawyers for the judges expressed support for the ruling. Norman Eisen, their representative, indicated readiness to assist in the investigation.
