About ten days ago, LSU added former head coach Ed Orgeron to Lane Kiffin’s coaching staff. This move addressed a significant weakness from their previous regime and was expected to strengthen their recruiting efforts. Although it was anticipated that Orgeron would make an impact, the speed of his influence in Baton Rouge surprised many.
Orgeron, who previously led the LSU Tigers to a victorious finish against Clemson in the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship, quickly made strides in recruiting. Within a short period, he arranged both an in-person visit and an official visit with Jalen Brewster, the nation’s top-ranked recruit and a five-star defensive tackle.
Brewster was previously leaning towards Texas Tech, where he was committed, and the Florida Gators. However, in under two weeks, Orgeron positioned LSU as a strong contender for Brewster’s commitment. Emerging videos from Brewster’s visit show him enjoying his time in Louisiana, which bodes well for LSU’s recruiting hopes.
LSU is also targeting another top recruit, Easton Royal, a five-star wide receiver currently committed to Texas. Royal, who hails from New Orleans, was already considered likely to switch his commitment to LSU. Orgeron’s involvement only increases the chances.
Hosting both Brewster and Royal during the same recruitment weekend is a significant achievement for LSU. Securing commitments from these top prospects would position the Tigers as a leading team in the 2027 recruiting class.
Currently, LSU has five blue-chip recruits committed, including two five-star prospects. Adding Brewster and Royal would help Kiffin and his staff finish their class with flexibility, likely ensuring a top-five ranking in recruiting.
When Kiffin signed as LSU’s head coach, concerns arose among other SEC teams about the Tigers’ potential in attracting talent. Hiring Orgeron appears to have accentuated LSU’s recruiting power, fulfilling earlier predictions. This combination may indeed make LSU an exceptionally formidable force in acquiring top talent.
