California Gubernatorial Candidate’s Controversial Support for Trans Athlete

6 days ago 0

California Democrat gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer gained attention after sharing a video with AB Hernandez, a transgender athlete, on social media. The video highlighted Steyer’s support for Hernandez, who is pursuing another set of state titles in girls’ track and field competitions.

The video quickly went viral, stirring mixed reactions across different political groups. Several liberal users, including advocates for transgender rights and public figures like comedian Stacy Cay, praised the video. However, there was significant criticism, mostly from right-wing circles.

Republican candidate Steve Hilton criticized Steyer’s support for transgender athletes participating in girls’ sports. He addressed the issue in an interview with Fox News Digital, stating, “Tom Steyer has taken a wildly extreme position on this issue that is totally out of touch with most California families and young people.” Hilton’s campaign also shared Steyer’s post, ridiculing his stance.

In the video, Hernandez talked about the challenges of being “outed” and “doxed,” discussing the need for safety and protection for transgender individuals. Steyer affirmed, “It’s the job of the governor to stand between danger and Californians.” He emphasized the importance of ensuring safety and protection from negative influences.

Steyer showed support by posing for a photo with Hernandez and the athlete’s mother. Hernandez advanced to the final round of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) championships, excelling in events like the long jump and triple jump. The CIF introduced a pilot program that awarded female athletes who finished behind Hernandez one spot higher, allowing them to share podium positions.

The finals were set for Saturday night, with Hernandez aiming to triumph at the podium for one last time as a high school athlete.
