Controversies Surround Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner

6 days ago 0

In 2025, Amy Gertner, wife of Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, informed his campaign about sexual messages he sent to other women. The disclosure occurred during the campaign’s internal vetting process. The Wall Street Journal initially reported this information.

Gertner, married to Platner since November 2023, stated they have attended counseling, claiming their marriage remains strong. She expressed her trust in a campaign staffer with deeply personal marriage details and voiced feeling betrayed by this violation of privacy.

Graham Platner, the likely Democratic nominee for the Maine Senate, will likely face Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November’s midterm elections. Former opponent Maine Gov. Janet Mills exited the race in April, bolstering Platner’s candidacy.

Platner’s controversial past includes problematic internet comments and a tattoo, perceived as a Nazi symbol from his Marine Corps period, later covered over. The election’s outcome might determine the controlling party of the Senate post-midterms.

Supported by progressive Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, Platner’s campaign draws on his working-class roots. In April, he discussed his controversial opinions during CBS News’ Major Garrett’s ‘The Takeout.’ Platner attributed past opinions to PTSD and experiences in the military, a ‘hyper-masculine, hyper-violent place.’

Platner reflects on his infantry background, acknowledging a crude humor and narrow worldview that shaped his beliefs. Over time, through broader experiences and interactions, his views have evolved.
