The United States men’s national soccer team confronts an injury challenge even before the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins. Chris Richards, a 26-year-old defender highly regarded on the team, will miss the international friendly against Senegal due to an ankle injury.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed Richards’ absence, noting that the injury also kept him out of Crystal Palace’s recent matches. Currently, there’s no public timeline for Richards’ recovery.
“I think he needs to keep doing his rehab,” Pochettino stated, emphasizing the decision was made for Richards to remain at the USMNT training facility in Atlanta.
Richards was unable to join his teammates in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the match against Senegal. He remained at Crystal Palace for their European final match, in which he was available as a substitute but did not participate.
Pochettino expressed concern about Richards’ readiness for the June 12 match against Paraguay in Los Angeles. Richards, wearing jersey number 3, has yet to train with the USMNT.
While Richards remains on the roster, FIFA mandates that all teams finalize their 26-man squads by June. Changes can be made for injuries up to 24 hours before the first match.
The USMNT plans to fine-tune their skills and team chemistry against Senegal and Germany before starting their Group D schedule. After facing Paraguay, they will play against Australia on June 19 in Seattle, and then Türkiye on June 25 in Inglewood, California.
The depth at the center back position, where Richards would naturally play, presents a concern, even after adjustments to bolster defense over attack. His potential role as a starter makes his recovery pivotal as the first match approaches.
