Graham Platner, the Democratic challenger to Republican U.S. Senator Susan Collins in Maine, faces scrutiny over personal text exchanges with various women after his marriage two years ago. Platner’s team confirmed the report to Politico, which followed an initial revelation by the Wall Street Journal. The texts were reportedly discovered by Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, just months after their marriage in 2024 as she alerted a campaign aide to potential issues.
Gertner discovered these texts before Platner’s campaign event featuring Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. However, the campaign deemed them a private issue between the couple. Gertner expressed frustration in a statement, feeling betrayed by a confidante who spread personal information about their marriage’s early days. She emphasized their ongoing commitment to each other despite these challenges.
Beyond personal controversies, Platner has encountered criticism for a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol and past inappropriate remarks on Reddit. Controversies included minimizing sexual assault and crude comments, attracting criticism during his campaign.
Despite these challenges, a recent University of New Hampshire poll showed Platner leading with 51% among likely Maine voters, against Collins at 42%. Platner emerges as the anticipated Democratic nominee after Governor Janet Mills exited the race in April.
Representative Ro Khanna, D-Calif., supports Platner’s candidacy, commending him for his positions on war, genocide, and economic reform. Meanwhile, Collins characterizes Platner as excessively radical for Maine, though Platner argues Collins has supported corporate interests over the years to the detriment of working-class citizens.
