Chicago Cubs’ center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong delivered an unforgettable performance at Busch Stadium on Saturday night. However, the same can’t be said for a St. Louis Cardinals fan who ended up with a piece of Crow-Armstrong’s highlight moment.
In the top of the eighth inning, with the Cubs leading the Cardinals 3-1, Crow-Armstrong took his position at the plate. St. Louis fans, especially from the vibrant ‘Tarps Off Crew’ section, greeted him with chants of being ‘overrated.’ This section, known for its shirtless fans, was previously prominent during a Cardinals game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
With a 1-0 count, Cardinals pitcher Gordon Graceffo delivered a fastball that Crow-Armstrong promptly turned into his seventh home run of the season. The ball flew right into the spirited section of shirtless fans.
Crow-Armstrong basked in the moment while rounding the bases. Amidst the cheers and boos, the fan who caught the home run ball tried to toss it back onto the field. Unfortunately, he didn’t quite succeed, mistakenly hitting another fan in the process with a notably awkward left-handed throw.
The attempt to return the ball encapsulated the Tarps Off Crew’s experience as their rival’s center fielder executed a 444-foot home run while chants echoed.
Crow-Armstrong not only made a mark with this homer but shone throughout the game, going 4-for-5 at the plate and also hitting a double. His performance was his first multi-hit display since earlier in the month. The Cubs’ 6-1 victory over the Cardinals paves the way for the series decider on Sunday.
