Genevieve McDonald, a Maine lobsterman and former state lawmaker, has become a significant figure in the controversy surrounding Democrat Graham Platner’s U.S. Senate campaign. The campaign is currently under scrutiny after a Wall Street Journal article revealed that Platner’s wife had warned campaign aides about his inappropriate messages to multiple women and the emergence of offensive online posts.
McDonald’s Involvement
Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, confided in McDonald during a vetting session in August 2025, shortly after Platner announced his candidacy. Gertner disclosed that Platner had sent explicit messages to several women after their marriage, with numbers reported as up to a dozen messages, while campaign officials suggested it was closer to six. This behavior reportedly ceased before the campaign’s start. Platner’s actions, including an active profile on the Kik messaging app, came to light just before the June 9 primary, where he is expected to secure the nomination against Republican Senator Susan Collins.
Campaign Dynamics
The race holds significant importance in determining Senate control. Despite Democratic preferences in recent presidential elections, Maine voters have consistently supported moderate Republicans. Platner, who became the frontrunner after Governor Janet Mills stepped back from the campaign, still faces a challenge from candidate David Costello.
McDonald’s Advocacy and Political Career
McDonald first gained attention in 2013 for urging apparel brand Grundéns to create fishing gear for women, which led to the Sedna line. Her involvement in the maritime industry and position on Maine’s Lobster Advisory Council bolstered her reputation as a mediator between regulators and fishermen. Elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 2018, she focused on fisheries, infrastructure, and economic issues before joining Platner’s campaign in 2025 as political director. However, following revelations of offensive Reddit posts by Platner, McDonald resigned from the campaign in October 2025, rejecting a $15,000 non-disclosure agreement offer post-departure.
Graham Platner’s Background
Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate, is an oyster farmer and Marine Corps veteran whose campaign has encountered multiple controversies. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan and transitioned to a security contractor role after military service. His political stance emphasizes affordable housing, universal healthcare, and reducing billionaire influence, with endorsements from national figures enhancing his appeal. Yet, offensive posts and a tattoo showing a Nazi symbol have tainted his campaign, despite support from some progressives, including Representative Ro Khanna.
Amy Gertner’s Defense
In a video statement, Gertner defended her marriage and criticized the spread of what she termed gossip. She highlighted efforts to address marriage challenges through counseling, acknowledging struggles with infertility and campaign pressures.
