5 days ago 0

A man from Hawaii has been charged with the murder of three men on the Big Island. Jacob Daniel Baker, 36, faces one count of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder, as announced by the Hawaii Police Department.

The charges followed consultations with the Hawaii County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney. The first-degree murder charge applies to the intentional killing of two or more people, while the second-degree charges relate to the individual victims.

Authorities have not revealed any motive for the killings. Baker’s legal representation had not been confirmed by Sunday, but he is expected to appear in the Hilo District Court on Monday.

In addition to the murder charges, Baker faces charges of burglary, car theft, and other related offenses. Police stated that his bail is set at no bail for murder charges, ensuring he remains in custody even if he posts bail for the property-related crimes.

Baker was apprehended on Thursday in Kalapana after a manhunt. He was a suspect in three murders in the Puna District, an area located on the east coast of the island. Police found him hiding in a cave, following reports of him evading capture by ducking in a field.

The victims, Robert Shine, 69, John Carse, 69, and a 79-year-old man, suffered fatal injuries. Shine was found in a pond on Papaya Farms Road with autopsy results indicating strangulation. The 79-year-old was discovered dead at another residence on the same road, also with injuries deemed suspicious by the police. Carse was found miles away, with reports suggesting he died from sharp-force trauma.

Police Chief Reed K. Mahuna disclosed that the only known link between Shine and the unidentified victim was their proximity, living merely a few hundred feet apart. The investigation remains ongoing.
