Alimber Santa Shines in Historic Major League Debut

1 week ago 0

Making a Major League debut typically comes with pressure, but preserving a no-hitter elevates the stakes. Houston Astros pitcher Alimber Santa stepped into this scenario during a commanding 9-0 victory over the Texas Rangers on Monday night at Globe Life Field.

Tatsuya Imai initially took the mound for the Astros, delivering six no-hit innings. Steven Okert followed with one inning of relief before manager Joe Espada brought in Santa to secure the historic moment. At just 23 years old, Santa pitched two flawless innings, concluding his debut by striking out Brandon Nimmo for his first career strikeout. The Elias Sports Bureau noted that Santa is the first pitcher since 1900 to contribute to a no-hitter in his major league debut.

“Yeah, there was some adrenaline,” Santa acknowledged through a translator, referring to the tension in the bullpen. “I was aware of the no-hitter, but focused on staying calm.”

Espada expressed his admiration for Santa’s performance, stating via MLB.com, “Proud of Santa. It’s a significant night for him and his family. I’ve seen this kid for years, and this moment is important for both the organization and him.”

Imai initially walked three batters but quickly regained control. Okert also issued a walk during his tenure on the mound. This combined no-hitter marks the Astros’ 17th during the regular season, adding to their total of 18, which includes postseason achievements. Notably, Houston achieved a combined no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies during the 2022 World Series.

The most recent no-hitter in the major leagues prior to this was pitched by Shota Imanaga and two Chicago Cubs relievers, resulting in a 12-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 4, 2024. Blake Snell recorded a complete-game no-hitter for the San Francisco Giants against the Cincinnati Reds on August 2, 2024.

The teamwork of Santa, Imai, and Okert concluded in an iconic win, celebrated with catcher Christian Vázquez. Previously, Ronel Blanco threw a no-hitter for the Astros in a 10-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on April 1, 2024, which was also Espada’s initial win as manager. Houston has contributed to three of the past seven and five of the last 11 major league no-hitters.

As the Astros (24-31) gain momentum from this achievement, they aim to continue their success in the next game against the Rangers (24-29) on Tuesday at 8:05 p.m. ET. The Associated Press provided additional insights for this report.
