Americans Reach Tipping Point with Digital Tipping Screens

1 hour ago 0

A recent survey by Popmenu reveals that tipping practices in America might be reaching a critical point. The survey found that 78% of consumers believe current tipping practices are excessive, with 74% noting an increase in suggested gratuity amounts on digital payment screens at restaurants. Of those surveyed, 59% reported feeling pressured to tip when prompted by these screens.

Changing Attitudes Toward Tipping

While many consumers are uncomfortable with what is being termed ‘tip creep,’ restaurant owners report that patrons still support traditional tipping when substantial service is provided. Vicki Parmelee, owner of Jumby Bay Island Grill in Jupiter, Florida, remarked that tipping 20% at a restaurant remains a norm ingrained in American culture.

It is pretty annoying to go up to a service counter and order a coffee, and then have them turn around a terminal and expect a tip just for handing you a coffee, Parmelee noted.

Derek Simms, CEO of Simms Hospitality Group, echoed this sentiment. He admitted even he finds the situation awkward, despite being in the restaurant industry.

Consumer Preferences

The survey highlighted that a significant portion of consumers choose to bypass suggested tip amounts on screens. Instead, 36% opt to enter a custom tip. Both Parmelee and Simms emphasized the importance of ensuring customers do not feel obligated to tip.

I tell my staff that a tip is always something that’s earned, Parmelee stated.

Simms warned of potential customer dissatisfaction if tipping prompts seem forced.

Tipping Practices and Customer Loyalty

The survey results suggest a clear distinction in consumer attitudes towards tipping in full-service restaurants versus every transaction. While 42% feel more comfortable skipping gratuities in some settings, many continue to tip servers traditionally.

Parmelee reaffirmed the significance of rewarding good service, noting that while most people tip around 20%, extraordinary service can receive even higher tips.
