Authorities in Kenya have arrested eight students suspected of setting a fire at a girls’ dormitory, resulting in the deaths of 16 schoolmates and injuries to 79 others. The arrests followed the blaze on Thursday at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil.
Kenya’s criminal investigations unit identified the eight girls as ‘persons of interest’ in the planning and execution of the suspected arson attack. Education Minister Julius Ogamba suggested charges could be forthcoming as early as Tuesday.
Investigators have conducted interviews, reviewed CCTV footage, and continue to analyze evidence from the fire, though the motive remains uncertain. The fire erupted just before 1 a.m. and was contained by 3 a.m.
This incident reignites concerns about fire safety in Kenyan schools. A 2020 audit revealed many schools are ill-prepared for emergencies, lacking functional extinguishers and alarms, despite a national safety manual published in 2008.
Past tragedies underline the issue; in 2024, a blaze in an elementary school dormitory killed 21 children. The deadliest incident occurred in 2001 when a fire set by students claimed 67 lives in Machakos.
Minister Ogamba reported that two teachers, previously informed of the suspected arson, would face disciplinary action. The school’s management has been dissolved for neglecting safety standards, including dormitory overcrowding and a locked exit door.
Parents on site expressed shock, reporting that some students had to jump out of windows to escape, resulting in various injuries. Seven students admitted to a nearby hospital were airlifted to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi for specialized treatment.
Official communication with parents has been criticized for being insufficient. The day before, parents demanded information regarding their children’s whereabouts.
Autopsies are being performed on the victims at a nearby hospital, where efforts to identify the bodies are ongoing, as per the criminal investigations unit.
