Australia Coach Tony Popovic Reflects on Refereeing Decisions in Loss to U.S.

1 hour ago 0

Australia coach Tony Popovic shared his views on the refereeing after their 2-0 defeat against the U.S. in Seattle. Popovic commented, “I think today was, I wouldn’t say the best day for the referee,” following the match.

A key moment occurred when the U.S. scored their second goal. Initially ruled offside, a VAR review overturned the decision, allowing the goal. This occurred when Alex Freeman, son of former NFL player Antonio Freeman, scored with a header during stoppage time in the 43rd minute. The Australian team protested, claiming interference with their goalkeeper or an offside, but the goal stood after review.

The match heated up when a physical incident led to Australia’s Harry Souttar and the USA’s Folarin Balogun being issued yellow cards after Souttar grabbed Balogun. Another yellow card was given to Australia’s Jacob Italiano. In total, Australia received four yellow cards while the U.S. received three.

After the game, Popovic was seen approaching German referee Felix Zwayer. Zwayer, aged 45, showed signs of fatigue, suffering a cramp late in the match. He required assistance from players, including USA’s Balogun and Australia’s Aiden O’Neill.

Despite frustrations, Popovic acknowledged the U.S.’s performance while noting his team appeared “sluggish.” He said, “I don’t know if it’s the occasion, but we looked sluggish, heavy-legged. They won every duel, they won every second ball.” He emphasized the challenge of competing when conceding “two soft goals.”

The U.S. leads Group D with six points, while Australia remains second with three points. Paraguay and Turkey have no points. The U.S. could clinch a victory in Group D and secure a favorable draw for the Round of 32 if Paraguay either beats or ties with Turkey. That match begins at 11 p.m. ET.
