Former President Barack Obama recently made light of President Donald Trump’s apparent preoccupation with him during an episode of the “All the Smoke” podcast hosted by ex-NBA players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson. Obama humorously remarked that he occupies “a suite” in Trump’s mind, pointing out that the current administration seems “fascinated” with him.
Addressing the alleged “negativity and the racism” directed towards him, Obama suggested interrogating Trump about his “obsession”. He noted, “I obviously have a room in his head, a suite in his head.” Barnes added, “rent-free!” and complimented Obama for handling things with grace.
Obama shared insights from his presidency, emphasizing that his focus was always on his responsibilities rather than on predecessors. “When I was president, the last thing I had time to do was worry about what somebody said or what my predecessor did,” he stated. He suggested that a leader’s focus should be on their current duties, describing constant concern with past administrations as “strange” and indicative of someone “not focused on the American people”.
A White House spokesperson, Davis Ingle, accused Obama of being “one of the most dishonest, divisive, and destructive Presidents in history.” Ingle’s remarks came in response to Obama’s comments on the podcast.
Obama also spoke about Trump’s demeanor, claiming a disparity between his public and private personas. He said, “I believe in conversation. So if this — whoever you were talking about — was in front of me, which has happened a couple of times, he don’t talk like that because he knows better.”
Obama acknowledged in a past New Yorker interview that he reflects on countering Trump “every day” but chooses not to act as a “commentator” like Jon Stewart. Despite Trump’s criticisms, Obama refrains from regular public commentary on the matter.
