In baseball, players often face risks of injury, yet getting struck by a ball thrown by a fan is unusual. Such was the case with Toronto Blue Jays’ right fielder Jesús Sánchez. He left Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles following an unexpected encounter with a ball from the stands at Camden Yards.
The incident occurred during the bottom of the sixth inning, with Toronto trailing 6-0. While in right field, Sánchez appeared to engage with fans beyond the wall. He turned away and was unexpectedly hit in the wrist by a baseball. Initially, the impact seemed serious.
“What’re you thinking? I’d fingerprint it right now,” remarked broadcaster Jim Palmer, reflecting the confusion viewers experienced.
A closer look at the footage offered crucial insights. Several fans indicated the incident might have been accidental. As reported by the Baltimore Sun, fans mentioned that a 13-year-old interpreted Sánchez’s glove movements as an invitation to play catch. Unfortunately, the timing went askew as Sánchez turned away when the ball was thrown.
While this encounter ended poorly, it recalls positive interactions. In 2012, Tampa Bay Rays’ Elliot Johnson engaged with fans in a playful exchange after a Twitter invite.
The Baltimore Orioles issued a statement indicating the fan involved was removed from the stadium. They have begun a comprehensive investigation to understand the event fully, while ensuring Sánchez’s well-being. Toronto Blue Jays reported the X-rays were negative, and Sánchez suffered only a bruised wrist. Once removed from the field, Yohendrick Piñango replaced him in right field.
This situation serves as a reminder to fans to ensure players are prepared and aware before tossing balls their way. Despite this mishap, the precautionary measures taken demonstrate the importance of safety for all involved in the game.
