California Election Updates: Key Races and Outcomes

In the 34th Congressional District, two Democrats will face off in November’s general election: Representative Jimmy Gomez and community advocate Angela Gonzales-Torres, as reported by the Associated Press. Gomez is currently under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for sexual misconduct allegations. Although he denies breaking any laws, Gomez admitted to personal mistakes. Gonzales-Torres, a Pasadena City College counselor, is backed by the Justice Democrats. The district covers downtown Los Angeles and Eastside neighborhoods.

In the governor’s race, Republican Steve Hilton continues to hold a lead, with Democrat Xavier Becerra closing the gap slightly. Democrats Xavier Becerra and Tom Steyer trail Hilton. Election laws in California prioritize voter convenience, leading to extended vote counting, especially in tight races.

Mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt leads City Councilmember Nithya Raman in L.A.’s primary election. Incumbent Mayor Karen Bass has secured a spot in the November election. Recent counts show Bass widening her lead.

A controversial initiative, Measure B, leads in Shasta County. It proposes voter ID requirements and restrictions on mail voting, violating state election laws, per critics like Cathy Darling Allen of the California Voter Foundation. If passed, legal challenges are expected.

Monterey Park made headlines as residents voted to ban data centers. The ban was supported by 86% of voters and opposes a 2024 proposal for a large data center.

In the race for California’s superintendent of public instruction, Sonja Shaw, a Republican, leads with a focus on cultural issues, such as banning transgender athletes from girls’ sports. Democrat Richard Barrera trails her.
