Christopher Atkins Reflects on Career and Sobriety at Fanboy Expo

Christopher Atkins recently opened up about his career and sobriety during an appearance at Fanboy Expo Knoxville in Tennessee. At the event, he revealed that his drinking cost him the role of Ren in the 1984 movie Footloose, which eventually went to Kevin Bacon.

The 65-year-old actor explained that the filmmakers behind Footloose wanted to meet with him before finalizing their decision. However, Atkins missed this opportunity due to his partying lifestyle at the time. He shared with the panel that he was “a mess” and unable to attend the meeting sober. “I had the part, but I was so messed up that they said, ‘Yeah, we’re going to have to pass on this guy.'” Atkins added that he is now nearly 40 years sober.

Atkins also spoke about his early career, reflecting on his breakout role in The Blue Lagoon alongside Brooke Shields when he was just 18. He noted that he had no previous acting experience and initially wanted to pursue baseball. Despite this, the movie became a major box office success, grossing over $58 million worldwide, and transformed him into an overnight star.

The actor reminisced on the filming of The Blue Lagoon, noting the relaxed environment during the shoot in Fiji. Atkins described how the use of body doubles and strategic camera work addressed the controversial elements of the film. He mentioned that the director, Randall Kleiser, aimed to portray the story as naturally as possible.

Reflecting on his life and career, Atkins expressed no regrets. Despite losing out on high-profile roles, he prioritized family over the allure of Hollywood. “I got to a point in my life where I married young,” Atkins said. “I wanted to be a dad more than chase the business.” He recalled his time teaching sailing and saving money for his future children, emphasizing his dedication to family life.

Atkins stated that he has participated in over 100 movies and television shows throughout his career. Now, as a proud father and grandfather, he looks to produce his own film. “That’s the last box I now want to check off,” he added. The actor expressed gratitude for his career achievements and family, noting his satisfaction with the life he built beyond Hollywood fame.
