Conflict in Lebanon Impedes U.S.-Iran Agreement

1 hour ago 0

The preliminary agreement between Iran and the United States, aimed at ending their conflicts, nearly came apart on Friday. The cause of this disruption was Lebanon, which has shifted from a secondary issue to a main obstacle in the American-Israeli war on Iran.

This situation became evident when tensions between the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah and Israel escalated, leading to the collapse of new talks between Tehran and Washington in Switzerland. Although neither side offered a specific reason for the delay, three diplomats, speaking under the condition of anonymity, indicated that Iran withdrew due to Israeli strikes in Lebanon.

Iran’s new leadership perceives Lebanon as integral to its national security, stated Mohanad Hage Ali, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut. He explained that previous Israeli actions against Hezbollah in 2024 paved the way for a direct confrontation with Iran. For Iran, the aim is for Israel to withdraw from Lebanon.

This diplomatic failure marks the second recent instance of the Lebanon conflict disrupting U.S.-Iran dialogue. Earlier this month, Israeli strikes near Beirut led Iran to launch missiles at Israel, prompting an Israeli retaliation across Iran.

These events unfolded shortly after the U.S. and Iran agreed to a preliminary deal to end their hostilities. This agreement demands an immediate end to military operations in Lebanon and aims to protect the nation’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
