Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark returned to the court in Indianapolis, facing challenges both from opponents and apparent referee oversights. Despite a clear foul categorized as a cheap shot, the officiation seemed unfavorable.
Early in the game against Phoenix Mercury, Clark showed a strong start but encountered aggressive defense while driving toward the hoop. She lost her balance in the paint, attempting to maintain possession while three Mercury players successfully stripped the ball.
Alyssa Thomas took additional measures by shoving Clark in the neck before stepping over her as the ball rolled away. Though video replay showed this, no foul was called, sparking disbelief on social media. An official was evidently stationed near the action but chose not to make a call.
What are we even doing here? Brutal cheap shot,”tweeted Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy.
He remarked on Clark’s impact on the league and criticized her treatment during the game.
Another social media user described Thomas’s actions as akin to assault, questioning the lack of a foul call and suggesting bias within the league.
Clark is familiar with physical play and the challenge of uncalled fouls. However, the WNBA continues to review technical fouls issued during a previous encounter with the Mercury. Clark, along with Sophie Cunningham and Myisha Hines-Allen from the Fever, and Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner from the Mercury, were assessed technical fouls. Thomas and Hines-Allen were eventually ejected due to additional fouls.
The league previously rescinded a technical foul for Dallas Wings’ Paige Bueckers in a similar clapping incident, hinting at possible reconsideration in Clark’s case. Her actions contributed to a tense sequence leading to the altercation.
Regardless, Thomas’s actions went unnoticed by the referees, and the game continued. Clark left in the third quarter due to a back injury, concluding her performance with 19 points and eight assists.
