California’s 7th Congressional District candidate, Mai Vang, is facing criticism following the resurfacing of videos showing her not participating in the Pledge of Allegiance. The clips reveal Vang turning away or remaining silent during city council meetings while others recited the pledge.
Most recently observed with downcast eyes during the pledge, Vang serves on the Sacramento City Council. She has addressed her stance, which stems from her desire to reflect on injustices she believes persist both locally and globally. She elaborated on her position in a 2025 Facebook post, emphasizing her commitment to centering her community and resisting complacency.
This is exactly why I choose not to recite the Pledge of Allegiance during every council meeting,” Vang explained. “As much as I love this country, I use that moment to ground myself—to center our communities and remind myself of the injustices and harm that continue to affect so many, both locally and across the globe, under this nation’s influence.
Vang’s non-participation has sparked controversy, with critics like Sacramento Democratic political consultant Steve Maviglio labeling it “completely disrespectful.” He argues that participating in the pledge is fundamental to patriotism, regardless of differing opinions.
Vang, who is challenging long-standing Democratic Representative Doris Matsui, aligns with progressive policies. Her platform supports universal healthcare, taxing billionaires, and abolishing ICE, reflective of her progressive stance.
The primary election is set for June 2. Vang’s candidacy is notable as part of a larger trend of progressive candidates mounting challenges to established Democratic figures.
