Senator John Cornyn of Texas experienced a significant loss in the primary runoff against Ken Paxton, a candidate aligned with the MAGA movement. The outcome was decided by a 28-point difference, marking a historically poor performance.
This defeat emphasized the growing trend of Republican voters shifting from established party figures to President Trump’s endorsed candidates. Mr. Trump’s loyal supporters have continuously shown their impact in Republican primaries throughout the year.
Despite a decline in overall popularity among voters, President Trump has achieved several primary victories. His support aided Mr. Paxton, who triumphed in the costly Senate primary despite lesser financial backing.
Mr. Cornyn, a seasoned senator serving four terms, lost significantly to Mr. Paxton. According to Decision Desk HQ, this was the worst result for a sitting senator in similar contests since 1974.
This defeat occurred shortly after another incumbent, Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, failed to advance in his reelection bid, receiving less than 25 percent of votes in a multi-candidate race.
The primary losses of both senators illustrate the disconnect between core party voters and Republican leaders not endorsed by Trump.
Earlier in May, Mr. Trump also succeeded in removing Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky in a House primary, reflecting his ability to challenge incumbents effectively.
