Daniel Suarez achieved a significant milestone in auto racing with a victory in the rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600. His win marked an emotional moment as the racing community mourned the recent passing of Kyle Busch.
A Memorable Win
Suarez became the first Mexican-born driver to win the prestigious Coke 600, securing his third Cup Series win and first since 2024. His connection to Kyle Busch provided extra emotion, as Suarez previously raced for Kyle Busch Motorsports.
“Kyle, he was special,” Suarez shared tearfully. “I did this for Kyle, his wife Samatha, his children Brexton and Lennix, and all his family.”
Suarez’s strategic decision to take two tires during a late pit stop proved crucial. This move allowed him to maintain the lead against Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin, ultimately winning when rain ended the race with 27 laps left.
Rival Reactions
Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin had chances to overtake Suarez on the final restarts. Bell expressed his disappointment, recalling his own rain-shortened win in the 2024 Coca-Cola 600.
“It wasn’t meant to be today,” Bell remarked. “That’s 2026 for us.”
Hamlin noted the unlucky circumstances that prevented him from continuing his strong performance.
“The 20 car and us were really battling because we knew whoever cleared him would win,” Hamlin said.
Honoring a Legend
Kyle Busch’s passing from severe pneumonia that led to sepsis cast a shadow over the event. NASCAR honored Busch with various tributes, including his No. 8 and signature on the frontstretch grass.
Busch’s family attended the race, with NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell affirming their support for them as part of the NASCAR community.
Race Highlights and Incidents
Kyle Larson completed the first stage as the winner. Hamlin claimed the second stage, while Bell won the third.
Defending champion Ross Chastain faced misfortune when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. clipped his car, causing a crash. Connor Zilisch and Austin Cindric also crashed out early in the race.
Chase Elliott’s involvement in another incident led him to finish in 37th place.
Austin Hill’s Role
Austin Hill, assuming Busch’s place in the No. 33 car, completed the race in 26th place. This followed Richard Childress Racing’s decision to temporarily retire the No. 8 until Busch’s son Brexton is ready to race.
Austin Dillon also faced setbacks, finishing 32nd due to car damage.
