Alcohol has long held a significant role in both professional and social settings in China. However, a shift is underway as a new generation begins to push back against the expectation of heavy drinking, with some choosing not to drink at all.

Increasing numbers of young people in China are opting to reduce their alcohol intake. They cite health, fitness, and economic reasons as primary motivators for this change. The influence of these factors is evident in personal and social ceremonies.
Chen Xue, a 27-year-old makeup artist, notes that at most weddings she attends, alcohol is no longer the staple for toasting.
“It’s perfectly normal,” Chen states. “Who wants champagne when you can have bubble tea?”
This sentiment reflects a growing trend among the younger population, who favor alternatives like tea over traditional alcoholic beverages.
