The planned opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge across the Detroit River has been postponed. The bridge connects Detroit, U.S. with Windsor, Ontario. Unresolved issues have caused the delay, according to the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority.
The bridge is a joint project between Canada and the state of Michigan. It was expected to begin operations later this month. However, recent developments have raised questions about the opening date.
In February, former President Donald Trump called for Canada to transfer at least half of the bridge’s ownership to the U.S. federal government. This added to past tensions over cross-border trade. Michigan officials and the White House have been in discussions to address these concerns.
Invitations for a ribbon-cutting ceremony were sent out following talks between Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Whitmer’s office described the project as an example of international cooperation.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick expressed opposition to the bridge opening. This has further delayed the process, though officials insist that the project is still viable.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge, named after the famous Canadian hockey player, is a significant economic project worth around $4.4 billion. It aims to reduce congestion at other crossings, such as the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor tunnel. Former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder negotiated its construction with Canadian funding. Work on the bridge began in 2018.
Concerns remain minor, according to U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin. She views this holdup as a temporary issue. The bridge’s completion is considered crucial for easing transit and trade between the two regions.
Trade between Detroit and Windsor traditionally used the Ambassador Bridge, the former leading commercial crossing between the U.S. and Canada. Recently, the Blue Water Bridge saw more traffic, handling more than 2 million trucks in 2025.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge will improve the efficiency of both commercial and personal traffic. This will benefit local economies and enhance the ease of cross-border commerce.
This is what government is supposed to do, make it easier for business to conduct commerce.
