Governor Kathy Hochul of New York, a Democratic leader, is receiving significant support as she pursues re-election, courtesy of an influential endorsement from New York City’s Mayor, Zohran Mamdani. Known for his progressive viewpoints, Mayor Mamdani endorsed Hochul on Thursday, emphasizing her commitment to meaningful discussions and tangible results. He noted, “New Yorkers deserve leaders who believe in transformation.”
Mamdani’s endorsement is noteworthy as he has become a prominent figure on the left since his unexpected victory in the Democratic mayoral primary last June. This support is particularly valuable for Hochul, who is looking to solidify her connection with progressive voters in the traditionally Democratic state of New York.
In a piece for The Nation, Mamdani articulated his reasons for backing Hochul, stating, “Governor Kathy Hochul has earned my endorsement because she has chosen to govern in that spirit. And in this moment, that choice matters.” However, he also acknowledged some policy differences with Hochul, specifically regarding the taxation of the wealthy. He supports higher taxes on the wealthy to address income inequality, a position he promoted in his mayoral campaign.
“The Governor and I do not agree on everything. We have real differences, particularly when it comes to taxation of the wealthiest,”
Mam;dani wrote.
“I continue to believe that the wealthiest among us can afford to pay just a little bit more.”
Following the endorsement, Governor Hochul highlighted her focus on key issues like affordability and healthcare, emphasizing her collaboration with Mamdani and opposition to former President Donald Trump’s policies. “Mayor Mamdani understands that we need to build a New York that everyone can afford,” Hochul stated.
Meanwhile, the Republican Governors Association criticized Hochul’s alignment with Mamdani, suggesting she intends to implement a socialist agenda statewide.
Hochul is currently facing a primary challenge from her lieutenant governor, Antonio Delgado, who recently announced far-left politician India Walton as his running mate. However, Mamdani’s endorsement likely boosts Hochul’s standing, as a Siena University poll shows her leading Delgado by 53 points.
In her choice for running mate, Hochul selected Adrienne Adams, former New York City Council speaker, to join her ticket, marking an all-female major party ticket in New York for the first time. If elected, Adams would also become New York’s first Black lieutenant governor.
On the Republican side, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is the expected nominee, following an endorsement from former President Trump. Blakeman’s candidacy comes as Hochul maintains a significant lead over him in recent polls for the 2026 race.
This political landscape reflects the evolving dynamics in New York’s gubernatorial race as candidates seek to position themselves ahead of the upcoming elections.
