Act Quickly

Treat stains immediately when you notice them. Delay allows the stain to seep deeper into the fabric. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon are especially absorbent. Often, running cold water over the stain is enough, but the key is early action.

Understand Your Stain

Different stains require different treatments. Sunny Escobar from Procter & Gamble suggests categorizing stains to understand how to treat them.

• Oil-based stains: Common with foods like mayonnaise or salad dressing. Use liquid dish soap to treat these stains.
• Pigment stains: Includes ink, which can be tackled with rubbing alcohol. Use a paper towel or cotton ball for blotting.
• Bloodstains: Start with cold water or use hydrogen peroxide, testing first to avoid fabric discoloration. For old stains, ammonia may help.
• Berry stains: Red wine and fruit stains can be addressed by running hot water through them. Boiling water is particularly effective.

Create a Stain Kit

Assemble a kit of household stain removers. Consider including:
