Real Madrid has announced unexpected presidential elections due to a challenge against long-serving president Florentino Perez. This comes from Enrique Riquelme, a renewable energy entrepreneur. Club rules say around 100,000 socios must decide between Perez and Riquelme in a vote within the next fortnight.
Perez remains the favored candidate. Plans to reappoint Jose Mourinho are paused. This election was unexpected, as Perez’s current term was supposed to run for four more years. Despite a disappointing 2025-26 season, Perez seemed secure until a surreal press conference on May 12 disrupted things.
During the conference, Perez spoke of conspiracies against him, hinting at Riquelme, without naming him directly. Riquelme, 37 and founder of Cox Energy, wrote an open letter to Perez. He expressed his interest in running, calling for more extended elections.
The club statutes, amended during Perez’s leadership, require a candidate to be a Spanish citizen, a 20-year club member, and able to guarantee 15% of the club’s annual budget. This poses a challenge for many but isn’t an issue for Riquelme due to his background and resources.
Riquelme began his career at a young age, starting at a family-owned gas station. At 21, he moved to Central America and made a name for himself by contributing to the Panama Canal expansion. He founded Cox Energy in 2014, which has projects across the globe, including a recent $4 billion acquisition in Mexico.
Riquelme’s father was a former club director, ensuring the membership requirement isn’t problematic. Riquelme has built relationships with key figures at Real Madrid, and he’s known for his connections with sports icons like Rafael Nadal and others.
Riquelme sees limited time to organize a comprehensive campaign. He has suggested the urgency comes from concerns over Perez’s plans to sell a share of the club to private investors. This idea is now on hold amid the election.
On Sunday, the board accepted Perez’s candidacy, and the upcoming election sparks debate within the club. Fans at the last La Liga game were reminded of Perez’s achievements as a large banner commemorated the Champions League victories under his leadership.
Riquelme, meanwhile, is focused on presenting his candidacy as something new and promising. The election is imminent, and while Perez halts the Mourinho decision, Riquelme seeks to sway socios with new ideas.
Observers doubt Riquelme’s short-term chances, comparing the situation to Barcelona’s political dynamics where charm often outweighs preparation. Still, Riquelme has two weeks to unveil fresh proposals that could change the club’s future.
