On Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel announced an escalation in the fight against the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah. This comes despite a cease-fire brokered by the United States in April. Recent military actions indicate a surge in hostilities, with the Israeli military reporting strikes on over 70 Hezbollah sites within 24 hours.
President Trump has sent mixed signals regarding the progress of a deal to end the conflict with Iran. However, Israel’s determination to continue its campaign against Hezbollah remains firm. Netanyahu confirmed in a social media video that Israeli forces had killed more than 600 Hezbollah militants in recent weeks. He emphasized that military pressure would increase.
We are at war with Hezbollah,Mr. Netanyahu declared, voicing a determination to intensify military efforts.
The heightened conflict between Israel and Hezbollah complicates negotiations between Iran and the United States. Iran has expressed a desire for Lebanon to be part of any agreement. Meanwhile, President Trump has not addressed the Israeli-Hezbollah situation while discussing a potential deal with Iran.
The death toll from Israeli attacks since March has risen to 3,185 people, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. Over 9,600 people have been injured in the conflict. The renewed fighting began after Hezbollah launched strikes on Israel following an American-Israeli offensive on Iran in late February. This violence has displaced hundreds of thousands of individuals.
