Evacuation Centers Open Following Hazardous Materials Incident in Garden Grove

City authorities have established new emergency shelters for residents displaced by a hazardous materials situation in Garden Grove. The Orange County Fire Authority announced late Friday that Kennedy High in La Palma is available as a shelter. By Saturday morning, Ocean View High in Huntington Beach also opened its doors, joining Savanna High in Anaheim and Freedom Hall in Fountain Valley as active centers.

Many cars filled the Kennedy High parking lot by 9 a.m., with the American Red Cross managing the shelter inside the gymnasium. Local police, school staff, and grocery store employees supported evacuation efforts.

Denise Guerrero, a 70-year-old resident of Garden Grove, discussed her experience since being evacuated from her home located near GKN Aerospace, where the chemical leak began. Guerrero recounted navigating several temporary stays before finding accommodation at Kennedy High, emphasizing the lack of direct communication from authorities. Residents frequently relied on social media for updates.

The Orange County Fire Authority reported stabilizing the temperature inside the compromised tank of methyl methacrylate at approximately 90 degrees Celsius. Despite efforts with on-site sprinkler systems, two dire scenarios remain possible: a tank explosion or a chemical spill.

The situation began Thursday when a tank system at GKN Aerospace failed, causing temperatures to rise and the contents to harden, obstructing the valves. This posed significant challenges for the removal of hazardous chemicals.

Throughout the weekend, residents like Tricia Quach faced struggles and unpredictability associated with the emergency shelters, while others had concerns about returning home. The long-term future remains uncertain for evacuees, as concerns persist about safety and the state of their homes.

Amidst the unfolding emergency, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Saturday as measures increased to protect locals. The state’s emergency services remain engaged to ensure community safety and support the local response. Residents are advised to adhere to official guidance and stay informed through the latest updates.
