Frank Garofalo watched from St. Rita’s bench for much of the season, awaiting his moment. Early on, the junior infielder struggled, but his confidence never wavered. A late-season injury to Braden Quinn gave him the chance he needed.
“I always believed I could compete, but opportunities were scarce,” Garofalo explained. “When BQ got injured, I seized my chance and performed well.”
In a pivotal moment, Garofalo delivered a crucial hit for St. Rita. His walk-off single in the seventh inning secured a 2-1 victory over East Peoria in the Class 3A state semifinal at Joliet’s Slammers Stadium. The win propelled the Mustangs to the state championship game.
Sully Kazee, heading to Southeastern in Iowa, pitched a solid game. He allowed only one earned run, struck out three, and limited East Peoria to three hits. Colin Quinn contributed by going 2-for-3, and Julio Gutierrez added a sacrifice fly that drove in Jayden Hawkins.
St. Rita celebrates after Garofalo’s walk-off RBI secured a place in the championship game, aiming for their first state title at 1 p.m. Saturday against Troy Triad. Historically, the Mustangs had lost in previous championship attempts in 2009, 2010, and 2014.
Coach John Nee, a long-time St. Rita figure and alum, emphasized, “It means everything for our community and alumni. Tradition never graduates. This opportunity isn’t just for us, it’s for everyone.”
Garofalo capped the game with his heroic hit following RJ Duncheon’s game-tying homer for East Peoria in the sixth. A critical sequence saw Jayden Ibarra start the seventh with a double. Despite being tagged out at third, pinch-hitter JJ Quinlan advanced, allowing Garofalo’s single to send him home; a hit that ignited the celebration.
Reflecting on the hit, Garofalo said, “I got a fastball. I knew the moment was big. This was my first walk-off ever, overflowing with emotions.”
Garofalo had shown his abilities in previous games, scoring in sectional and supersectional victories. Coach Nee recognized, “Frank stepped up, filling in whenever needed, particularly defensively. Now, he’s delivering consistently at the plate.”
Kazee admitted relief, saying, “I was thrilled. I sensed a big moment was coming, and when it happened, I just knew we would clinch the win.”
Garofalo reflected on his journey, “Baseball has been my love from the start. I thrive in high-pressure moments. This win means everything to me.”
