How a ‘Housewives’ Original Became a Reality TV Blueprint

4 weeks ago 0

Twenty years ago, when Vicki Gunvalson joined “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” her future as a major reality TV personality was uncertain. Throughout her tenure, she showcased a vibrant and unfiltered personality that left a lasting impact on reality television.

Vicki, often referred to as “the O.G. of the O.C.,” was one of the founding cast members. Known for her workaholic nature and residing in an upscale California community, she managed an insurance business while being part of the groundbreaking reality series. The show originally aimed to be a social experiment, according to its producer, Scott Dunlop.

“We have no idea what’s going to happen. It’s a documentary of your life.” — Scott Dunlop, original producer.

Over its 20 seasons, “The Real Housewives of Orange County” chronicled the complicated lives of suburban women, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon. The series expanded to include 10 American spinoffs, numerous businesses, and a dedicated fan base. Vicki exited in 2019 but returned in a part-time role in 2023.

During an appearance at BravoCon last November, the show’s executive producer, Andy Cohen, invited her to rejoin for the 20th anniversary season, premiering on July 9. Cohen noted that while Vicki’s life has evolved dramatically, her essence remains unchanged, making her a vital part of the show’s continued success.

This reality TV juggernaut not only redefined who could become a reality star but also cemented Vicki Gunvalson’s status in the industry as an enduring icon.
