Introducing MIR: The Miniature Intraoral Robot
At the University of Basel in Switzerland, researchers are developing a tiny dental robot known as MIR, short for Miniature Intraoral Robot. This device aims to revolutionize the crown preparation process by minimizing dental appointments.
MIR’s prototype facilitates tooth preparation making it simpler to fit crowns. With digital precision, the robot could prepare teeth for crowns, reducing the number of necessary dental visits.
Technical Aspects of MIR
MIR is designed to work via a custom-fitted dental splint based on the patient’s scan, ensuring that the robot follows head movements seamlessly during procedures.
This innovative robot operates following a digital treatment plan and prepares tooth models in various stages. Initially, a wide drill reduces the tooth surface, followed by a precise drill to shape the sides.
Sizing and Precision
The prototype measures 43 by 26 by 28 millimeters, comparable to a wine cork, making it suitable for oral environments without obstructing the dentist’s view. This compact size ensures efficiency while maintaining comfort.
MIR boasts impressive precision with a positional error below 0.2 millimeters, despite lacking direct measurement sensors. It has been tested on tooth models of synthetic and ceramic materials, maintaining force levels below five newtons.
Research and Development Outlook
More work remains before MIR becomes available in dental practices. Upcoming stages include equipping the robot with sensors and cameras to accurately track its position and monitor treatments.
Developed at the University of Basel’s Department of Biomedical Engineering, MIR is a collaboration with the University of Zurich and other institutions. Research has been published in IEEE Transactions on Medical Robotics and Bionics.
