Iran’s Military Claims Closure of Strait of Hormuz Amid Contradictory Reports

2 hours ago 0

Iran’s military has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to recent air strikes in Lebanon, which they described as “America’s blatant breach” of a peace agreement. This information comes from Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency. Despite this claim, politicians from both sides assert that the critical shipping route remains open.

A message from Iran’s military operation command, posted on Tasnim’s Telegram account at approximately 9:10 a.m. ET, declared the strait closed to vessel traffic. However, this statement is in direct conflict with previous remarks from Iran’s foreign ministry, which assured Tasnim earlier that morning that shipping through the strait was “operating normally” and had not been closed.

In a live interview with Fox News around 9:30 a.m., U.S. Vice President JD Vance confirmed that “the straits really are open,” referencing ongoing efforts to maintain clear shipping lanes.

Tasnim is known to be a semi-official Iranian news agency linked with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Its reports often align with military or hardline positions rather than representing a unified government policy.

The contradictory statements have introduced new uncertainty regarding the status of the Strait of Hormuz. This strait plays a crucial role as one of the world’s most significant oil chokepoints, where approximately one-fifth of global energy supplies typically pass.

Further developments in this breaking news story are expected.
