In the absence of Carlos Alcaraz, many viewed the French Open as an ideal chance for the 24-year-old Jannik Sinner to secure another title. This would have marked his maiden win at Roland-Garros.
However, in a surprising turn of events during the second round, Sinner faced a significant upset. He initially led against the 56th-ranked Juan Manuel Cerúndolo by winning the first two sets. Yet, he lost the next three sets, resulting in a 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 defeat.
“Sinner appeared to struggle with the heat throughout the match,” observers noted, especially during his attempt to serve for the match in the third set. He required assistance due to cramping at that point.
From that moment on, in 84-degree conditions, Sinner lost 18 of the subsequent 20 games. This defeat not only cut short his journey at Roland-Garros but also ended a 30-match winning streak he had maintained since February.
The victory at the French Open was crucial for Sinner as it was the final major he needed to achieve a career Grand Slam. With Carlos Alcaraz, the No. 2 player globally, sidelined due to injury, many anticipated Sinner would progress significantly.
After triumphing in the first two sets, Sinner became a significant favorite among live bettors, being listed at -100000. Nonetheless, the unexpected occurred.
Juan Manuel Cerúndolo will progress to face either Martín Landaluce or Vít Kopřiva in the third round on Saturday.
