The NBA Finals come with immense pressure and excitement that everyone in the basketball world can feel. Yet, New York Knicks star center Karl-Anthony Towns shared how he experienced “a calm and a peace” during Game 1 against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night. This sense of tranquility was linked to his mother.
Playing at Frost Bank Center, Towns felt the presence of his mother, Jacqueline Cruz-Towns, who passed away in April 2020 due to COVID-19 complications. Though she wasn’t physically present, Towns expressed feeling her presence all day, which provided him comfort despite the high stakes.
Towns said to the “Inside The NBA” crew on ESPN, “I don’t know what it was, but I just felt a calm and a peace that, I don’t know, had to be coming from the woman above.”
The Knicks claimed a 105-95 victory over the Spurs, with Towns contributing significantly. Reflecting on the game, he stated, “I felt like a kid. It was just fun out here. This is something that, as a kid, you always dream about. It felt like I was seeing her in the stands, and it was really comforting.”
Towns acknowledged that the NBA Finals come with intense pressure, requiring precise execution. However, feeling free of doubt allowed him to perform effectively, particularly when the Knicks faced challenges. Towns’s ability to remain calm played a pivotal role in their Game 1 win.
During the third quarter, Towns helped the Knicks overcome a 14-point deficit. His defensive efforts against Spurs star Victor Wembanyama and creating second-chance opportunities were crucial. By addressing these challenges, Towns fueled a momentum shift in favor of his team.
Towns completed the game with 18 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and one block. His shooting was 7-of-15 from the field. Despite admitting that he and his team didn’t execute flawlessly on offense, their defense was essential in securing the victory.
The win marked the Knicks’ 12th consecutive victory, an impressive feat in their journey to the NBA Finals. They aim to continue their streak in Game 2 against the Spurs on Friday, with aspirations of returning to Madison Square Garden for the subsequent game.
