Kelly Ripa, known for her lively presence on daytime TV, recently underwent a dental procedure that temporarily halted her ability to speak. Her husband, Mark Consuelos, revealed this during Monday’s show, sharing details of Ripa’s gum graft surgery.
Addressing guest Nick Jonas, Consuelos stated, “Kelly sends her love. She had gum graft surgery.” This type of surgery, according to the Cleveland Clinic, is generally performed to address thinning or receding gums. Although recommended for years, Ripa postponed the procedure.
Consuelos humorously recounted that her dentist advised around five years ago to schedule the procedure sooner or later. Ripa had jested, “I didn’t think I’d still be on the air in five years!” The recovery process is proving challenging, requiring her, famously talkative as she is, to limit conversation time.
Jonas quipped, noting the difficulty for someone as conversational as Ripa. Consuelos noted the difficulty in ensuring Ripa follows medical advice, admitting, “I’m trying to keep her to follow the rules.”
At home, the bigger challenge for Ripa is adhering to the guidance of not investigating the progress of her healing gums. Consuelos shared a moment where Ripa asked him to evaluate her healing saying, “I’m not pulling your lip down.” Instead, Ripa positioned herself so Consuelos could check without touching.
Ripa is known for her high pain threshold and usually foregoes novocaine at the dentist. The current recovery is marked by significant discomfort. As Consuelos explained to Jonas, “Yeah, it’s painful. But she famously doesn’t feel pain.” Jonas acknowledged the tenacity observed in women, including Ripa and his own wife, Danielle.
Ripa is planned to return to her role at “Live with Kelly and Mark” the following week, as confirmed by a representative. Meanwhile, audiences eagerly await her comeback.
