Lake Forest’s Madelyn Cummins Leads Team to Victory in Sectional Championship

7 days ago 0

Lake Forest’s senior midfielder, Madelyn Cummins, is familiar with high-pressure playoff situations. As a four-year starter, Cummins played a crucial role in guiding the Scouts to a Class 2A supersectional in her freshman year. Her experience proved vital again during the tense 2A Lake Zurich Sectional championship on Friday.

In the second half of a scoreless game, Cummins was awarded a penalty kick. She embraced the challenge with confidence. “We’ve been practicing penalty kicks frequently, so I felt prepared,” Cummins said. “Last year, we faced a tough loss on penalty kicks during regionals. Managing that pressure is critical. It’s not comfortable stepping up, but it’s necessary to win.”

Her decisive penalty kick in the 55th minute earned the third-seeded Scouts a 1-0 victory over the fifth-seeded Bears. Lake Forest, boasting a 15-7 record, had previously defeated Lake Zurich (16-6-1) by one goal in a North Suburban Conference match. The team is set to face Crystal Lake Central (19-2) in the Lake Zurich Supersectional, a team that bested the Scouts in 2023.

Reflecting on the game, Cummins said, “My freshman year, we lost a tough match, so we’re eager to overcome that this year. Advancing is a tremendous honor. I felt a wave of emotions after the game, knowing everyone gave their all.” Cummins added to her team’s success with her 14th goal of the season. Despite Lake Zurich’s senior goalkeeper Kelly Nelson managing a touch on the ball aimed at the upper-left corner, she couldn’t prevent the score. Cummins faced an injury setback after the goal when she was struck in the nose by the ball and had to exit briefly. “I was tired, but determined to take that penalty kick,” she stated.

Lake Forest coach Ty Stuckslager expressed his confidence in Cummins’ ability. “Maddy is a natural competitor,” Stuckslager remarked. “Her speed and first touch are impressive, and she knows what needs to be done. She demonstrated exceptional poise, especially toward the game’s end.”
