Lingering Smoke from Los Angeles Blaze Affects Boyle Heights Community

1 hour ago 0

The persistent smoke from a fire at a cold-storage facility in Los Angeles has subsided, yet Boyle Heights residents feel trapped in a toxic environment. The towering smoke plume, once dominating the city’s skyline, has faded from black to a lighter gray as firefighters tackle remaining flare-ups.

In Boyle Heights, east of downtown Los Angeles, residents face the smoke’s harsh effects. They report difficulty breathing, headaches, and irritated eyes even indoors. The intense smoke periods have created dystopian-like conditions, with streets enveloped in darkness and visibility drastically reduced.

Consuelo Granadas, an 80-year-old resident, voiced her struggles while standing outside her home on Monday. ‘It’s been hell,’ she said, noting the oppressive smell permeates her home continuously. Despite the challenges, she remains unwilling to leave her pets behind.

Nearby, in East Los Angeles, Mayra Grijalva, 60, a resident of the working-class Latino community, wears a white N-95 mask and sunglasses for protection when venturing outside during her work break. She reports that the smoke’s odor penetrates her home despite sealed door frames.

Ms. Grijalva was seen waiting by her gate as a county worker approached her with a clipboard, stepping out of a parked car on her street.
