Healthy nails are firm and shiny. They may have some lines but should generally be smooth, according to Dr. Shari Lipner, a dermatologist.
Caring for fingernails and toenails often receives less attention than teeth and hair, says Titilayo Bankole, a professional nail technician. Nails play a significant role in everyday activities, and losing a nail can make simple tasks difficult, remarks Dr. Lipner.
To care for your nails, adopt good hygiene habits and regularly examine them. Actions like picking at cuticles or overexposing nails to water can lead to damage. Untreated fungal infections in nails can spread and become contagious, Dr. Lipner warns.
Seven Tips for Nail Care
No trimming, biting or picking at your cuticles: Cuticles serve as protective barriers, preventing bacteria and fungus from entering. Removing or damaging them can result in infections. Dr. Dana Stern advises gently pushing cuticles back with a washcloth post-shower.
Clip straight across your nail: Cutting nails straight across avoids ingrown nails. Use glass or crystal nail files instead of cardboard ones to smooth edges without causing damage. Avoid nail-biting to prevent infections and other issues.
Go easy on the buffing: Light buffing can enhance nail growth and shine. However, over-buffing can thin and weaken nail plates.
Keep nails and hands moisturized: Moisturize nails and surrounding skin to prevent dryness. Use cuticle oils containing antioxidants and nourishing elements. Opt for moisturizing creams for hands due to their higher oil content compared to lotions.
Take breaks from manicures and pedicures: Acetone polish removers, hard gels, and heavy acrylics might damage nails over time. Regularly check for changes in nail texture or color that might indicate a need for a break or consultation with a dermatologist.
Wear gloves to protect nails from excess moisture: Nails absorb water more than skin, making them susceptible to expansion and contraction. Wear gloves during activities that involve prolonged moisture exposure.
Remember: nail health is health: Nails can indicate overall health conditions like vitamin deficiencies or liver disease. Report any unusual changes to a healthcare provider and ensure nails are clean for examinations.
