NBC has revealed that sportscaster and former professional tennis player Mary Carillo will be stepping in to host the opening of the Winter Olympics this weekend. Initially, Savannah Guthrie was expected to fulfill this role, but due to her mother Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, Carillo will take over.

Nancy Guthrie, who is 84 years old, was reported missing after being last seen at her Arizona residence on Saturday. Authorities were alerted of her disappearance by a family member on Sunday afternoon, as confirmed by Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.

Savannah Guthrie was originally set to co-host the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Milan, Italy, on Friday. The games are scheduled to take place from February 6 to 22. In a statement, Molly Solomon, the executive producer and president of NBC Olympics Production, expressed support, saying, “Our hearts go out to Savannah and the entire Guthrie family. They continue to have our full support.” She also acknowledged the depth of talent available, emphasizing the capability of Mary Carillo, referred to as a “master storyteller.” Carillo will team up with NBC Sports correspondent Terry Gannon to guide American audiences through this significant global event.

The changes in hosting duties extend beyond the opening ceremony. Ahmed Fareed, initially scheduled for Olympic daytime coverage, will now anchor Olympic Late Night, replacing “Today” co-host Craig Melvin. Melvin will stay in New York to maintain his morning show responsibilities during Guthrie’s absence. The announcement highlighted Fareed’s adaptability and readiness to take on the late night role before heading to Los Angeles for the NBA All-Star Weekend.

Additional details and coverage of the Olympics and other cultural events can be acquired through NBC and other news platforms.
