The Mercedes team is seeing a heated rivalry in the Formula 1 drivers’ world championship. Kimi Antonelli secured victory at the Canadian Grand Prix in a race filled with competition against teammate George Russell. This win marks Antonelli’s fourth consecutive Grand Prix victory, extending his lead over Russell by 43 points.
The race was a challenging one for Russell, who faced a power unit failure on lap 30 and had to retire from the lead position. Reflecting on his win, Antonelli remarked that while it wasn’t the way he hoped to win, he appreciated the competition with Russell. Lewis Hamilton from Ferrari claimed second place, with Max Verstappen of Red Bull racing into third.
Before the unfortunate mechanical issue, Russell was demonstrating exceptional performance. He clinched pole position for both the sprint race and the Grand Prix, edging out Antonelli by a mere 0.068 seconds. Russell also took victory in the sprint race and led the Grand Prix until his car malfunctioned. Expressing mixed emotions, Russell shared his frustration about the breakdown but felt satisfied with his overall performance during the weekend.
Entering the season as the favorite, Russell has seen Antonelli emerge as a formidable opponent. Antonelli is proving strong in the quest for the 2026 championship, marking a stark contrast to his previous season where Russell held dominance. Their on-track duel was captivating for fans in Montreal, with multiple overtakes as each driver sought the lead.
The contention started during the sprint race when Antonelli attempted an aggressive maneuver but ended up on the grass. Antonelli criticized Russell’s tactics on team radio, seeking a penalty, which led to a reprimand from team boss Toto Wolff for airing grievances publicly. Despite these tensions, Antonelli managed to finish third in the sprint.
The season has been tough for McLaren as well. Lando Norris showed early promise, moving ahead of both Mercedes drivers at the start. However, both Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri faced challenges with tire strategy and car reliability. They ended up off pace, with Norris retiring and Piastri finishing in 11th.
The next race is scheduled for June 7 in Monaco, adding more excitement to the ongoing championship. Antonelli remains optimistic, commenting on the unpredictable nature of the circuits but committing to a strong performance.
